The International Budget Partnership (IBP) is a global nonprofit that works to ensure public budgets serve the people they are meant to support. Operating across more than 120 countries, IBP equips citizens, journalists, and advocates with the tools needed to understand national budgets and hold governments accountable.
IBP partnered with Teal to redesign its website as a central platform for education, data, and engagement. The new site was conceived as both an informational resource and an evidence-based storytelling tool, allowing users to explore country-specific data, access research, and understand the real-world impact of budget decisions. At the time of launch, IBP’s work had contributed to improved or expanded public services for millions of people and significant increases in national budget allocations across multiple countries.
Open Budget Survey
In addition to the core site, Teal redesigned the Open Budget Survey, IBP’s flagship initiative and the world’s most comprehensive independent assessment of budget transparency. The survey interface translates complex datasets into interactive visualizations that allow users to track performance over time, compare countries, and examine results across transparency, public participation, and oversight.
Each country profile includes tools that let users explore how specific reforms could affect overall scores, reinforcing IBP’s focus on actionable insight rather than static reporting. The system was designed to be intuitive and accessible, balancing analytical rigor with clarity so users can engage deeply with the data without specialized training. Paired with documentary photography and clear narrative structure, the platform connects policy decisions to lived experience and demonstrates how informed advocacy can drive change.
